Film Research & Analysis: Bad Idea (2024)

A Bad Idea (2024) is a short film about a young male who wants to make a video. He's looking for hints, advice on the internet forums, and a scene that he could recreate. He found a scene from the Hannibal TV series, where the main character is cooking, and he is performing a trick that our protagonist aims to copy. After some preparation, and after about 100 shots taken, after many hours, he managed to perform the trick.

Shots

In the first scene of the video, the character is researching the internet to find an idea. The scene is captured with extreme close-up shots. At 0:06, when he is typing, we can see his hands from a high 90 degrees angle (bird's eye).

Then the next shot where we can see an extreme close-up up is where we see letters he is typing in the browser, and search results  (0:07). This gives the viewer an idea of what he is looking for and what he wants to do.

Next, at 0:33 we can see a close-up shot of the character's face that reveals his emotion and reaction to the events.

Another shot I want to mention is a medium full shot. A viewer can observe this shot in the 'Take 1' scene at 0:48, when the character begins trying to perform a trick. In this scene, the medium full shot helps to show the scale and difficulty of the trick.

Angles

In the video, we can see that low-angle, eye-level, and high-angle shots.

High Angle:

Lighting

The video uses low-key lighting, which creates a dramatic atmosphere.

Sound

The video includes diegetic sound such as the sound of a cracking egg, and non-diegetic sound, the background music.
