Photography Project: Above & Below

Today, we practised photography techniques by taking photos from  'Above and Below' - low and high angles. We began with analyses of Corrine Day's and Terry O'Neill's work.

These two photos by Corinne Day are taken from a high angle showing the beauty and contrasts between elevated viewpoints and revealing the stories that often go unnoticed. I was trying to achieve a similar effect, focusing on the technical side without thinking about anything else, as I began my story with a photograph.

After a short introduction to photography, I went outdoors for some practice to reflect the concept in my photos. My device was a Canon EOS 700D, with f/4.5 - f/5.6, exposure time 1/3, 200. I was experimenting with different settings, so they may differ sometimes.

Later, I created a Contact Sheet using this online tool: https://www.contactsheet.photos, because I had some problems with Adobe software.

I selected a few better photos to describe them and analyse what I could improve.

The first photo is alright, however, the face could be sharper, especially the left side. The second photo is too bright, and the exposure value is too high.

The photos are trivial and boring. My drunk uncle at a family party could probably take better ones. Still, it was just practice, so I expected this kind of result. Next time, I'll focus more on the brightness.

  1. Lutek, I never consider photographs trivial, yes it was a practice and so if you could have taken better ones explain here how you could have improved these images and which settings you may have changed. The first image clearly needed more light and you could have used exposure compensation or adjusted the ISO for instance.

    1. Thank you for your feedback! I just want to clarify that my description of the photos as “trivial and boring” referred to their quality, which was affected by my lack of skill and experience. I appreciate your suggestions and will keep them in mind next time.
